Common Mistakes to Avoid in Salary Negotiation

Salary negotiation can be tricky, and avoiding common pitfalls is key to a successful outcome. Here are some mistakes to watch out for:


  1. Not Doing Your Homework: Going into a negotiation without knowing your worth or the market rate for your position is a major mistake. Without this information, you risk undervaluing yourself or asking for an unrealistic amount.


  2. Not Revealing Your Salary: If possible, disclose your current salary with the intention of including every single benefits you have. Instead of focussing on your basic salary, it's time to include all the other benefits, including: allowances, toll card, petrol card, parking, bonus, accommodation, travel allowance, company car etc.

    In Malaysia, you will have better chance of progressing through the first stage when you share your salary. Play it to your favour. Include everything when you disclose your salary, not just your basic!


  3. Accepting the First Offer: Employers often expect you to negotiate, so the initial offer may have room for improvement. Even if the first offer seems good, consider asking for a bit more to see if there’s flexibility.


  4. Being Too Aggressive: While it’s important to advocate for yourself, being overly aggressive or confrontational can backfire. Approach the conversation with a collaborative mindset, aiming for a win-win outcome.


By avoiding these common mistakes, you can navigate your salary negotiation with confidence and increase your chances of securing a better deal.
